I got my new Chinook Book today. Which coupon did I use first? G.O. baby!!! Like you had to ask. Took that sucker straight to Crown Hill.

Disclaimers: 1. I may or may not love G.O. more than it is socially acceptable to admit. 2. It’s possible I’ve made rules to limit the amount I discuss G.O. in company. 3. It’s maybe true that I’ve broken those rules on more than one occasion. 4. I also may or may not have updated my FB status with rhapsodic descriptions of a G.O. shopping experience. I know. You’re totally wishing that your friends were this interesting.

And just to take things one step further I now intend to itemize my Chinook Book savings in a list that I will update throughout the year.

Stonecrop

I initiated an experiment in the flower box outside our living room window today. The Whiz made me a sweet flower box for my first mother’s day to replace the one that he built out of the old carport that we tore down when we moved in here over ten years ago. I love the idea of having it constantly overflowing with seasonally appropriate plants- petunias and nasturtiums in the summer; pansies and violets in the fall; boughs of holly and evergreen in the winter; and jonquils, hyacinths and tulips in the spring. But that’s not exactly happening. So I’m trying out some sedums instead. A bunch of stonecrops for now. I was feeling cheap so they’re a little sparse, but I also eventually want to fill in the gaps with hens and chicks and other spreading types to keep the visual interest in seasons when the stonecrop is not in bloom. I’m even thinking about fashioning a slight mound out of chicken wire and filling it in with dirt/ moss and then planting into that to make the box look more full. But for now I’m pretty happy with the stonecrop.

What does it mean to be a shark? Why, that is an excellent question. To be a shark means to be lord of the sea. King of the jungle so to speak. Top predator in the ocean.

You asked what it means to be a shark and I said it means to be top predator. Yet you want to ask what it means to be top predator don’t you? Yes? I can see it in your eyes. Here. I will show you.

See these tiny animals swimming all around us? No. Look more closely? They are everywhere in the ocean. These are the zooplankton, tiny little animals. That feed on tiny plants. All animals need to eat. Some animals eat only plants like these zooplankton.

Other animals eat animals like these tiny fish feeding on the zooplankton and like this massive whale filtering great mouthfuls of zooplankton.

These fish get eaten by other fish, but the whale. This whale is a top predator because no one else in the ocean hunts and eats him.

And that’s like us too. We eat the fish that eat other fish that eat zooplankton. Sometimes we eat seals that eat fish that eat other fish. Most animals eat and are eaten. Not us. We just do the eating. And for that reason we can live a long time.

Good news right. Who wouldn’t want to grow up to be a shark?
